Literature-Shakespeare Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Literature-Shakespeare - Essay Example A woman who had declined to marry, almost certainly because she would lessen her own status and ability to rule by doing so, although her father’s various mishaps will also have had their influence. At the time most women were in a very restricted place in society, either under the control of their father’s or husbands, and unable to make decisions for themselves In many production of the play the parts of the queen of Athens and that of Titania are played by the same person – does Shakespeare therefore show them as reflecting different parts of the same character? .It should be remembered that it was not until the time of Charles II that women appeared legally on the English stage, so that these parts would have been played originally by young boys. The Plot This is a complex one involving 4 couples , Theseus , Duke of Athens and his bride to be , Hippolyta: Oberon and Titania the fairy king and queen: and two pairs of young people - Hermia and Lysander: Helena and Demetrius. After many tricks and turns, including of course the play within a play, love conquers all. At the beginning Theseus dominates his bride to be, reminding her of how he had wooed her, the queen of the Amazons, :- woo'd thee [Hippolyta] with my sword, And won thy love doing thee injuries; But I will wed thee in another key, With pomp, with triumph, and with revelling. (I.i.16-19) Hippolyta is therefore portrayed a conquered former enemy and apparently compliant. Is that how Shakespeare sees royal spouses or merely how he portrays them? He was born after the death of Henry VIII and Mary Tudor had died in his infancy so he had no personal experience to go on. . Hippolyta’s response is minimal, especially as they are interrupted by the entry of others. . He has conquered her by his physical strength. How much choice did she have in the matter? Would the audience understand erotic references in ‘sword’ and ‘injuries’ at a time when chastity in a bride was so prized? She merely discusses the short time left until the wedding. The rulers have had their quarrel and settled it as mature adults before the play begins. They have resolved their own differences. For the others though the action is all ahead of them and they do not have as much control over their own affairs as the rulers enjoy. Hippolyta does not appear again until near the end of the play ( Act iv) when she enters with her husband and Egeus. Theseus comes over as being very much in charge, giving orders to others. To Hippolyta, although he still tells her what is going to happen, he does address her as ‘Fair queen’. Her response is merely to reminisce. In Act v she disagrees with her husband - he thinks the lovers stories are mere fables, but she accepts them as being true witnesses ‘ More witnesses than fancy’s images. However this isn’t an argument really. By the end of the play Hippolyta seems merely world weary. She wants the rustic’s play to be over - Act V , scene 1, ‘I am a weary of this moon, would he but change’ and ‘I hope she will be brief.’ She criticizes ‘ His speech was like a tangled chain’ ‘ It is after all her wedding night. There are more important things to come than watching a silly and badly done play about thwarted lovers. Hermia The play is very much of its time . Rulers, if not Elizabeth I, did marry for political reasons. For others there was not much more choice. The idea of young people marrying because they were passionately in love was still an alien

How Do Artists Use Symbols in the Meaning of Their Work Essay Example for Free

How Do Artists Use Symbols in the Meaning of Their Work Essay Artists use symbols in different ways in their works to define their true feelings and to illustrate ideas and experiences. The three artists I will use to demonstrate how symbols can be used to gain different meanings are, Joseph Cornell, Salvador Dali and Rosalie Gascoigne. Cornell uses symbols to represent his fantasies and dreams, Dali also uses surrealist symbols to represent his desires and dreams and Gascoigne uses symbols to represent the landscape where she lived and decay. Joseph Cornell is an American sculptor and filmmaker. He was born on the 24th of December 1903 and died on the 29th of December 1972. Bebe Marie was created in the early 1940’s. It is made from a papered and painted wooden box that contains a doll in a dress made of cloth and a flower made also of cloth. If you look closely you will notice the intricate detail on the doll that has been placed behind the cluster of twigs. Because there is a doll in this sculpture, it perhaps has something to do with childhood and the numerous dark twigs suggests that the childhood portrayed was not a very delightful or happy one. Cornell likes to depict fantasy inspired and illusory images in his works, like in his work The Hotel Eden. Because Cornell lived in New York, he found many interesting and strange objects. He was also interested in second-hand bookstores, so he found a way to incorporate that in his work. Salvador Dali is a Spanish painter, sculptor and filmmaker. He was born on May 11th 1904 and he died on January the 23rd 1989. The Persistence of Memory was made in 1931. It was created by using oil on canvas. The work mainly features melted clocks and sky above the horizon. The clocks in this particular work are what give it a meaning. These symbols represent the facts that dreams can change and become strange and distorted. This work revolves around dreams and personal psychological fantasies. In fact, all of Dali’s work is based around dreams and psychological fantasies and generally things that simply do not occur in reality. For example, Dali’s work Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bumblebee around a Pomegranate a Moment Before Awakening. This work also goes back to the idea of reality and fantasy because of the tigers attacking the nude woman and the elephant hovering above the ocean. Rosalie Gascoigne is an Australian artist and sculptor. She was born on the 25th January 1917 and had died on the 23rd of October 1999. Regimental Colours was started in 1990 and finished in 1991. It was made using sawn soft drink crates on plywood. The work features various brands of soft drinks such as Schweppes. The main symbol in this work is the worn down surface. Many of her works are created around her interest in her surroundings. She likes to use older, worn down materials and signs that show age and have a history. Just like show has shown in Regimental Colours and also her work Sweet Lovers, she does this to show the memories and experiences through the aging material. In conclusion, symbols used in artworks are a very great way to express your inner feelings and emotions. Artists use this to their advantage so they can make their works more interesting and in depth.

Love Loss And The Court Of King Claudius :: essays research papers

Love, Loss, and the Court of King Claudius   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Shakespeare worked with the simplest of principals, writing at the mind’s own speed, using everything he read, but reworking it first, and depending upon characters for the defining trait or flaw. One theme which constantly emerges throughout Hamlet is the theme of love and loss, revealed by the characters of Hamlet, Laertes, and Ophelia.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is a young man subjected to much heart ache in the course of this play. His first loss being the suspicious death of Hamlet’s beloved and respected father, Hamlet Sr. Even Hamlet’s Uncle/Step-father, King Claudius, noted in speaking with young Hamlet that his mourning was serious. â€Å"’Tis sweet and commendable in your nature,† says Caludius of Hamlet’s behavior, â€Å". . .But to persevere in obstinate condolement is a course of impious stubbornness. ‘Tis unmanly grief. . .† (Act I, Scene II, lines 90-98). Hamlet was heartbroken at the loss of his father, which was reflected in his outlook on life. He regarded Denmark as a prison and spoke to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of having bad dreams. Unfortunately Act I is not the only time where young Hamlet expresses pain from love and loss. Although he is cruel and unkind to Ophelia in their meetings of both Act III, Scenes I and II, he is only expressing the frustration that has built up inside of him toward all women, and directed it at Ophelia because she was available. Hamlet had not ceased to love her. He explains his true feelings for Ophelia upon arrival at her burial, completely shocked that his beloved maid has died, saying, â€Å"What is he whose grief bears such an emphasis, whose phase of sorrow conjures the wand’ring stars and makes them stand like wonder-wounded hearers? This is I,† (Act V, Scene I, lines 267-271). He then goes on to say he would do anything to prove his love, including be buried with her. Hamlet lost yet another person dear to him, his lover, fair Ophelia.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Hamlet is only one character in the play who experiences love and loss. Ophelia is another. In Act III, Scene IV, after the performance of The Mouse Trap and The Murder of Gonzago for the royal court, Hamlet mistakenly kills Polonius, the father of Ophelia and Laertes. Ophelia already believed she had lost the affections of her Hamlet due to their dialogue from Act III, Scenes I and II. She had sacrificed his love because her father and brother had ordered her to turn him away. And now, to learn that her respected father,

Pros and Cons of Forming an LLC

Among the foremost choice an individual might encounter as a business owner might be, if at all or not to register his business or set up a limited liability company – LLC. (Evaluating Incorporating a Business or Forming a Limited Liability Company (LLC)) Setting up a Limited Liability Company –LLC has come to be an accepted choice in case of solely managed businesses and partnerships who have considered setting up a corporation with a view to safeguard one’s own assets. (Why More Business Owners  Choose LLCs) LLCs pose a better option in case of corporations and partnerships as these are equipped with a lot of advantages of both.A limited liability company, or â€Å"LCC†, therefore is a business which is not incorporated and has the twin features of a corporation as well as a partnership. This organization is especially appropriate in case of family businesses, professional licensees, non-US resident owners and businesses running overseas. (Incorporatin g Questions) An LLC is sometimes depicted as a blend of a partnership and a corporation. This is due to the fact that a LLC mixes the tax benefits and management adjustability of a partnership with the liability protection of a corporation. (Why More Business Owners  Choose LLCs)The benefits of forming an LLC remains that the members are given limited liability and have been charged taxes similar to that of a partnership. Through the formation of an LLC in place of a corporation, an individual avails of the entire spectrum of advantages of setting up a corporation, however one can stay clear from a few problems that one might face if he sets up a corporation. (For Entrepreneurs: Forming an LLC) The maximum advantage of forming a company or setting up an LLC lies in its scope to segregate one’s personal identity from one business, lowering the possibility of one’s own assets becoming implicated by business debts or lawsuits. The additional benefit comprises likely tax benefits, simpler access to capital funding, ownership secrecy and centralized management. (Frequently Asked Questions: About Incorporating)Particularly, at the time when an individual forms a corporation, he is taxed twice. This irritation is possible to circumvent, in case he sets up an LLC. The LLC permits more than one owner, or members. Moreover, a managing member is present, who also avails the benefits of limited liability and is naturally the person in charge of the management of the business. It is the proprietor’s personal income tax returns through which the profits or losses go through directly on their Form 1040.The LLC books a Form 1065, and subsequently makes a record of every member’s taxable profit on Form K-1. To put in different words, the LLC itself never files taxes. This is the implication of avoiding double taxation with an LLC. In case of a corporation, it works in a different manner. Taxes are imposed on the corporation, and, consequently shou ld file taxes. Subsequently, distributions to the proprietors are taxed. In spirit, the government charges twice from one’s revenues in place of once in case of an LLC as opposed to a corporation. (For Entrepreneurs: Forming an LLC)  LLCs possess a higher flexibility at the management level compared to corporations. (Why More Business Owners  Choose LLCs) In case of setting up an LLC, two alternatives for organizing the management of the LLC are there: â€Å"Member-managed† or â€Å"manager-managed†. The proprietor of LLCs, those who are current members in the management of their business sometimes set up an LLC which is managed by the member. In case of LLC which is managed by the member, management authority and obligatory authority remains with all of the members or owners of the LLC.â€Å"Manager Management† is the place in which one or more people irrespective of proprietors are chosen to shoulder responsibility for managing the LLC. The propriet ors who are themselves not owners, at times family members those who have put in their money in the company just relax and share in the profits of LLC. In case of an LLC having a manager, simply the appointed managers possess a chance to vote on management decisions and function as the agents of the LLC. Managers may or may not also be members of the LLC. In some instances, the concern in a manager-managed LLC might be contemplated to be the securities with the condition that it is registered with the federal and/or state government. (Advantages of Forming an LLC)An additional benefit of setting up an LLC is the safeguard given to the proprietors from personal liability in case of business debts and/or claims. Since, just LLC assets are made use of for meeting business liabilities, LLC owners become the loser of just the money which they have invested in the LLC. As against this, sole business owners and general partnerships give no limited liability protection in case of their owne rs- rendering the owners of sole proprietorships and partnerships to be liable in their individual capacities for every debt, claims and obligations linked with business.Setting up an LLC can even be a big option for partners seeking flexibility in the means they share ownerships and profits. As against corporate shareholding whose ownership of stock and share of profits should be in percentage of their investment, partners in an LLC can normally share ownership in any manner they think it to be suitable. For instance, ownership of an LLC having two partners can be subdivided halfway in case they decide as such and in that case each partner might not have to pool half of the total capital investment. Besides, as against corporations, LLCs function somewhat unofficially. For instance, LLCs are normally permitted to function with no restrictions on the annual ownership and management meetings. (Advantages of Forming an LLC)Nevertheless it continues to a good norm to conduct meetings a nd keep a record of decisions, however, no one is under any compulsion to act in that manner under majority of the state rules. Because of this, an individual can have considerably more time in his hand, placing one in charge of and when meetings are held, as one considers vital. Besides, proprietors of LLCs who are against accepting default tax classifications have the choice of choosing an independent tax classification. For instance, an LLC might choose to be taxed as a corporation. This choice is made by submitting the filled in IRS Form 8832. An LLC which prefers to be imposed taxes as a corporation continue to reserve the legal features of an LLC under the rules governing LLCs in the state in which it is established, however it is considered as a corporation for purposed of taxes, put under corporate income tax rates and the same tax considerations related to conventional corporations. An LLC might also prefer to be taxed just like an S corporation. This preference is exercised by submitting the IRS Form 2553. (Advantages of Forming an LLC) Finally, as against corporations, it is not customary for LLCs to conduct an annual meeting and draft meeting minutes. (Why More Business Owners  Choose LLCs)But what is the reason behind everyone not joining the LLC brigade? Are there any demerits of an LLC? What is the reason behind every corporation in the world not getting converted to a LLC status? What are the reasons behind the continued formation of the conventional C corporations and S corporations? There are not many answers to that question. (For Entrepreneurs: Forming an LLC) To speak the truth, everything is far from being perfect. Some costs and problems arise from running an LLC. LLC possesses the demerits of being less popular. The limited liability company is the latest arrival on the corporate scene. Even though this is changing fast, some individuals are not aware about LLC compared to a conventional corporation – which is something to think about when attracting investors and so on. (LLCs: Do They Make Sense for Your Business?) As a lot of companies will be looking forward to investment from outside sources and will be presenting stock options to employees, several angel investors and venture capital firms continue to be gun-shy regarding investing in LLCs as this is a new business set up that is hardly intelligible. (For Entrepreneurs: Forming an LLC)An additional preference of the C Corporation over the LLC is that legal companies are poised to possess a lot more boilerplate accord for C Corporations compared to a LLC. Therefore, one might be incurring more legal expenses in the formation of an LLC as more time is required to be devoted by the lawyer during drafting agreements. Indeed, this will transform with the passage of time as greater number of business companies espouse LLC category. (For Entrepreneurs: Forming an LLC) LLC also face the demerits of higher costs incurred in banking. In case of accounts for smal l businesses or unofficial partnership, these are sometimes free, till an individual maintains a higher balance. However a bank account in case of a limited liability company will possibly charge fees of $10, $20 or higher every month. LLC possess more intricate tax returns. An LLC will submit its own tax return in case it is running as a partnership firm, C corporation, or S corporation. This implies one’s expenses for tax return will be close to few thousand dollars annually. Besides, as documents in case of a limited liability corporation are required to be filed with the state, as against a general partnership, it implies tardiness to a little extent. (LLCs: Do They Make Sense for Your Business?)To conclude, it might be held that LLCs are a superb establishment whose reputation is rising. LLCs are among the most adaptable business establishments available which are perfect in case of small or fresh companies. In case of a lot of new businesses, establishing an LLC implies the ideal of both scenarios. Akin to a partnership, taxes are imposed directly to the business, evading the double taxation problem with the corporations. Moreover, akin to corporations, LLCs present liability shield in case of owners and their assets.Additionally, lesser concurrent needs and rules and regulations minimize the extent of paperwork and maintenance required to safeguard an LLC’s standing, thereby rendering them safer compared to corporations. But, LLCs is not everybody’s cup of tea, since it has its demerits too. It is important to know regarding the advantages of LLCs and also its disadvantages.ReferencesAdvantages of Forming an LLC.For Entrepreneurs: Forming an LLC.

Academic Writing What Is It And How Successful A Writer...

Academic Writing: What is it and How Successful a Writer Am I? When it comes to writing, many would say that there are two distinct â€Å"camps†: those who like to write, and those who do not. It is not unusual to find many members of the former group exploring this enjoyment through the domain of creative writing. Further, creative writing allows for a great deal of free reign. This field of writing allows the writer an all-access pass to self-expression. What is more, creative writing often affords the writer - and the writer, alone - complete governance over the writing process. In other words, creative writers get to make the rules. Whether the task at hand is composing a poem, a short story, or even a no holds barred†¦show more content†¦In fact, acquiring strong, effective academic writing skills can benefit students in the long-run, well beyond their college years. Academic writing requires some structured rule abiding, yes, but there is also something to be said for learning discipline. In sum, academic writing r equires the following: focused, concise writing; clear knowledge of the writer’s audience; sincere understanding of the topic/message being addressed; correct sentence structure/organization, punctuation, and grammar; and, of course, the writer’s personal conviction. If one does not believe in their ability to convey a certain message - or if one is wishy-washy on the topic itself - how can one’s audience truly embrace that moment? Being resolute is of supreme importance with academic writing. To begin, a very important element to academic writing is the ability to be concise and clear on the subject/theme. A writing piece need not be exhaustive in volume. Many successful pieces of writing are â€Å"to the point† and of modest length; this does not mean that the pieces are lacking in content or adequate detail. It is important to note that readers can quickly lose interest, grow bored, or even become intimidated if a piece is too lengthy (information overload!). This is largely contingent on subject matter (think: highly scientific, or a paper that extends beyond â€Å"lay† knowledge). Thus, learning to cultivate rhetoric that covers all the proverbial

The Cruelty Of Solitary Confinement Essay - 1363 Words

It was in a brainstorming situation that I discovered the topic of discussion I wanted to hear a convincing opposition against. I knew that choosing something more controversial would garner a greater opposition, but at the same time, I wanted to avoid topics that seemed almost too commonplace in assignments like this. With that in mind, I decided to hear out the opposition against my view of the inhumanity of solitary confinement. The person with whom I discussed, who will be referred to as Person X for the purposes of this write-up, believed that in certain situations, solitary confinement was a just punishment. We had this discussion waiting for our Microbiology class to begin. Bringing up random topics of discussion is not something unusual within the scope of my character, and so rather than wait for an opportunity that would not present itself, I simply asked Person X for his/her opinion on solitary confinement as a justified punishment for convicted criminals. To give the disc ussion some direction and so that I could better understand Person X’s point of view I asked some questions. The two most important I found being: â€Å"Why do you feel that it’s okay to punish people like that in some cases but not in others?† and â€Å"How long is too long?†. I found these questions particularly helpful in understanding Person X’s position because I noticed that he/she didn’t completely agree with either one side. He/she was intent on making a point based on conditionality.
